Once you’ve taken care of your acne, the job isn’t over yet. Now it’s time to get rid of those acne scars. If you’re like most people, some of those acne can have developed into scars. These can be difficult to get rid of, and will continue to leave your face looking less than ideal. Luckily, there are a few different ways to take care of these scars, and today, I’m going to be taking a look at some of the best methods to take care of them: both natural and non-natural.
A variety of medical treatments exist that can help get rid of your scars. While I don’t believe these should be the first line treatment(I prefer natural remedies), these can definitely work if you aren’t getting the results you want from more natural methods.
Microneedling is a process whereby you insert small pinpoint needles into your skin inducing a wounding effect. These microscopic wounds initiate growth factors to come in to heal the wounds. Specifically, this can stimulate the production of collagen which helps your body rejuvenate itself and heal the scars.
Microneedling can cause some minor side effects. Typically, people experience redness, soreness, and pain after the treatment due to the inflammation. However, these side effects subside quite quickly.
Microneedling can be done in either a doctor’s office or at home. Usually, if done by a professional, they will use a microneedling device like a pen that will allow them to pinpoint specific areas and the professional can adjust the depth of the needles to pick the perfect depth for your needs. This can also be done at home. Users can purchase “rollers” which they can use to roll the area of the skin that they want the effects to be seen on.
Laser treatments can be a good option for many people. It works by removing the upper damaged layer of skin to show the younger cells underneath.
However, laser treatment might not be the best option for everybody as it is very dependent on the type of scarring and skin the person has. Also in certain individuals, it can cause a sensitivity reaction. But for the majority of people, laser treatments can work very effectively.
A dermatologist may recommend a chemical peel which is the process of applying a chemical that causes it to blister and peel off revealing the new skin underneath.
Peeling can cause redness, sores, and blisters that can last for 7 days. Typically, if chemical peels don’t work, dermatologists will then move on to lasers to fine target the areas better.
While chemical peels might be effective, they aren’t my favorite method as I just hate introducing chemicals that cause your skin cells to die. It just isn’t natural to me, but it works great for many people. This can definitely be an option if nothing else is working to get rid of acne scars.
There are a wide variety of natural products that can have beneficial effects on the skin and help get rid of acne scars. These tend to be my preferred treatment, especially as a first line treatment. They have no side effects, are natural, and cheap to acquire. I feel that they are definitely worth a try, and if they fail, you can always move on to medical treatments.
Aloe Vera is a plant that has many anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used for thousands of years as medication, and works great as something to help treat your acne scars.
In order to get the maximal benefits, you’ll want to get the actual aloe vera leaf, not any of those gels you find in the store. You’ll want to cut open the leaf and scoop out the gel. Apply the gel to your scars and massage it in. Leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse it off. Try and repeat this twice daily until you see effects.
Lemon is a great natural tool to help with acne scars. Specifically, it works to lighten your scars and rejuvenate your skin. It works great as a natural “bleach” and helps remove dead skin cells, improve skin elasticity, and promote new skin cell growth.
Typically with lemon, you can apply it directly to the scars alone, or you can apply the lemon mixed with honey. You’ll want to apply these to your scars and keep it on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse it off and repeat this twice daily for maximal effects.
Coconut oil is another fantastic and cheap natural tool to use in treating your scars. It is a great source of antioxidants and vitamin E as well as fatty acids. This helps rejuvenate your skin cells and promote new skin cell growth.
For coconut oil, you’ll want to lightly warm it up and then massage it onto your scars for 10-15 minutes. Keep on your skin for an hour and then rinse off. Repeat once daily for several weeks until you see results.
As you can see, there are many different methods to help you get rid of acne scars. This article covers just a few of the methods you can take to help reduce your scars and rejuvenate your skin. While I do believe natural methods should be tried first, it is always your decision.
Medical treatments can work very well and give you quick results. But natural results, in my opinion, are much safer, and can give you longer lasting benefits without any of the side effects. Regardless of what method you choose, I hope that this article has helped give you some more information on the options that are available to you!
