One of the hardest things that I found when searching for makeup that was compatible with my skin was looking for primers. This was a real struggle for me, as many primers would inflame and irritate my skin. Over the years, I’ve come across many primers that have suited my face, and in turn, my acne. Best Primers For Acne Prone Skin
Since primers are basically your first line application in the makeup routine, they can really make or break your skincare. Choosing a primer that suits your skin type is very important to keep your acne controlled. The best thing I’ve found when it comes to shopping for primers is to take a look at the ingredient list for some very important ingredients that should be contained.
Obviously, some ingredients are very recognizable such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and sulfur which are base staples in acne-fighting regimens. However, an ingredient that I didn’t know much about is dimethicone. Dimethicone is fantastic for controlling shine from oily faces. It also helps seal in hydration preventing drying and inflammation of the skin. It is also great in smoothing out the skin and it protects the skin from outside irritants as well.
I definitely try to keep an eye out for ingredients such as these when I am looking at primers. I’ve found that a combination of these ingredients has been key in keeping my acne controlled while wearing primers. I also try to find primers that are cost effective and won’t break the bank. Hopefully this list of the best primers for acne prone skin should help you make an informed decision about which primer will be best for your type of skin.
One of my favorites and an absolute staple in my regimen, this primer was one of the first primers that I found which agreed with my skin. It is incredible for oily skin as the mattifying primer contains a clay which helps absorb excess oil. Additionally, it is very effective in smoothing out my skin and getting rid of blemishes. What also really makes it so great is that the effect does carry over for the entire day and even into the week. Using it daily makes my skin feel smooth and healthy, and I really have had no irritation at all when using it. While it is on the more expensive side at $47, I believe it is well worth it for the significant benefits you receive. I truly do believe in this product, and will stand by it till the end. If you have oily or combination skin, this is one product you cannot go wrong with!
This is definitely one of the more unique primers I’ve used in a while. Not only is the actual design of the container unique from other primers, the ingredients list is also fairly different. The main focus of this product, as derived from the name, is its emphasis on silk extracts. The silk powder helps makeup glide on the skin and last longer. The silk extracts help nourish the skin and diminish the size of pores and any imperfections. It also contains a unique anti-aging compound called Hadasei-3 which helps restore a more youthful appearance. This product is definitely one of my “going out” primers. This primer is incredible in how long lasting and amazing it feels. It is definitely a bit pricey, but you really don’t need much to cover your face. A container can last an entire year if you use it sparingly. But the texture of the cream is just blissful with how smooth it is. You can really feel the silk in the product. And the claims of makeup going on smoother are absolutely true. It makes my going out makeup routine significantly easier and keeps my makeup on my face. This is definitely one of the most important primers in my kit, and it’s one I highly recommend you try out!
This is my go-to primer if I am looking for something lighter and more relaxing. If I know I will be outside or need something heavy duty, this isn’t my first choice. However, if I’m just having a girls night or doing something chill like getting lunch, I love this primer. Putting this primer on is just so refreshing and it feels natural and cool mainly due to its blend of algae, honey, and peony extract. It also contains a ton of other natural goodies like blueberry extract, resveratrol, cranberry extract, and vitamin E to help shield the face from harmful irritants. And finally, yes the serum is true to the name. It does give a nice healthy glow to your skin, and I’ve definitely had my fair share of compliments from friends and family after wearing this!
This is an incredible product that I save for occasions where my skin is just really acting up and my pores start to get too large. This product has earned a pretty significant cult following, and I can see why. This is THE primer to use if you have significant sized pores. I guarantee that using this primer will help decrease the size of your pores and make your skin look much healthier. Some notable ingredients in this product are Red Clover Flower Extract which helps shrink the pores over time by rebalancing the skin conditions that cause pore enlargement, tea tree oil for keeping the skin balanced and hydrated, and flaxseed extract to absorb excess oils and mattify shine. And the best part is that it makes your skin feel so dang soft. First time I put this on my face, I could not stop touching my skin because it felt so soft. This is one that I highly recommend if you’re having some difficulty with large pores.
Anybody who knows me knows that I love my all-natural products, especially when it comes to skincare. This one is no exception. This product is a blend of natural products such as wild rose oil, turmeric extract, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid to create an amazing blend to help hydrate and brighten the skin. Probably one of my most favorite things about this primer is the smell. It smells absolutely amazing and I love putting this on. It works great in giving me a nice bright shine throughout the day while keeping my skin feeling hydrated and wrinkle free. One thing I do want to note is this is actually a product I recommended to my mother as it is all-natural and she absolutely loves it. This is now the only primer that she uses and she can’t stop raving about it! Definitely a favorite for me and her, and if you want something natural for your face, this is the product to go for!
If you’re really active and spend a lot of time outside in the sun, this is the primer for you. The Coola Daydream Mineral Primer is unique in that it contains spf 30 for sun protection. It also contains antioxidants from ingredients such as plankton extract, shea butter, white lily, honeysuckle, and other herbal ingredients. The biggest problem I’ve found with zinc based primers is that they can appear too chalky and greasy. This product has just the perfect blend of ingredients so that your skin ends up looking smooth and clear. I’ve never had a problem with this primer, and its definitely in my kit whenever I end up traveling and know that I’ll be outside for long periods of time.
This is another fantastic product when it comes to shrinking pores and keeping a good hold on your makeup. With a lot of natural ingredients like probiotics, alpha glucans, and blue agave extract, this serum contains a lot of great ingredients to make your skin feel soft and look great. This is a serum that I definitely enjoy using from time to time. I usually alternate this with my Dr. Brandt serum if I want a more cheaper option and this works pretty well. I would say it’s not quite as good as Dr. Brandt, but it still provides great hold and works wonders for my pores. It is definitely a pretty solid pick when it comes to primers!
I hope that my picks for the best primers for acne prone skin has helped you out! When it comes to picking a primer, you don’t want to settle for something that’s gonna cost you 5 bucks at CVS. Your skin is an investment, and for long lasting results, you need to pick the best products for you. Obviously, this is just a list of things that have worked for me personally. Everybody is different, so it’s possible that there might be a primer not on this list that suits your skin. The key is to keep experimenting until you find the right option. Good luck on this journey, and I hope my list has helped make your job a bit easier!
